Korean food giant CJ CheilJedang scores best-ever quarter on jump in overseas sales

South Korea’s CJ CheilJedang Corp. enjoyed a stay-at-home boon from virus outbreak, reaping the best-ever quarterly earnings in the second quarter on surge in demand for ready meals at home and abroad. The food giant disclosed Tuesday that it recorded 384.9 billion won ($324.7 million) in consolidated operating income for the second quarter ended June 30, up 39.5 percent from the first quarter and 119.5 percent from a year earlier.

CJ ENM: Profitability-focused Strategy Paying off

CJ ENM reported revenue of KRW837.5bn and OP of KRW73.4bn. With people spending more time indoors amid the pandemic, revenue for digital media and commerce have been given a boost while that of TV ads/movies/music have been dampened. Media revenue climbed 33.3% QoQ despite COVID-19’s full-quarter impact; TV ad revenue plunged (-30% YoY), but this was offset by digital revenue, which hit a historic high (+16.6% YoY).

Korean dramas push cultural content exports beyond $10 billion

In 2019, Korean cultural content exports posted $10.3 billion, an 8.1% increase from 2018. It was the first time for such exports to exceed $10 billion, posting almost double the volume from the $5.27 billion posted in 2014. The introduction of over-the-top (OTT) media services has helped boost the global popularity of Korean dramas. Their reputation also rides on the acclaim of the Oscar-winning film “Parasite” and Korean boy band BTS.

On the morning of August 8, the Korean Film Council announced that as of 7 a.m. KST, Lee Jung Jae and Hwang Jung Min’s new film “Deliver Us from Evil” had officially surpassed 1 million moviegoers. According to the film’s distributor CJ Entertainment, the movie has amassed a total of over 1,078,000 moviegoers since its release on August 5—putting it on par with this summer’s biggest hit thus far.

Korean Firm Transports Ultra-heavy Plant Equipment Through Lego-like Modular Method

A South Korean logistics firm had succeeded in transporting and shipping 28,000 tons of ultra-heavy plant equipment manufactured by a major energy company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through a Lego-like modular method. Starting from November last year, CJ Logistics Corp. has been engaged in the transportation and shipment of semi-assembled plant equipment made at the Abu Dhabi-based National Petroleum Construction Company’s module processing plant from the factory to the barge.

Korean Food Maker’s Shares Surge 135% Since March on Ready-Made Meal Demand

Surging demand for ready-to-eat food as people stay indoors because of pandemic restrictions has helped the shares of a South Korean food company more than double in the past four months. CJ CheilJedang Corp. has risen 135% since March 19, beating a 54% gain in the benchmark Kospi index. While the company was helped by the absence of severe lockdowns in South Korea, from where it draws about half of its sales, the real boost came from abroad.
