K-Pop Conglomerate Hunting for U.S. Acquisitions

CJ Group, the South Korean company responsible for spreading much of K-pop’s popularity abroad, is considering acquiring entertainment and food assets in the U.S. as part of the conglomerate’s plans to triple its revenue by the end of the decade. U.S. revenue has been growing at an annual pace of 35 percent during the past five years and that momentum is likely to persist as CJ begins sales of its cosmetics through Nordstom Inc.’s online mall soon and pushes its Bibigo-branded foods.

CJ CheilJedang's Bibigo to Introduce 'Taste of Korean Cuisine' in U.S.

CJ CheilJedang’s Bibigo will begin its television advertising in the United States from October 19. Global Multiplex Chain CJ CGV Signs to Open Cultureplex Theatre

The world’s fifth largest global movie theatre chain, South Korea-based CJ CGV, has signed a lease for a 34,000-square-foot multiplex at Tangram in Flushing, Queens. At the core of the retail component will be CJ CGV’s unique movie-going experience known as ‘Cultureplex’ – a concept emphasizing the entire movie theatre as a complete and immersive cultural experience. CJ CGV will also tap its expertise in programming top Hollywood and Asian films.

Korea's First Permanent PGA Tour Event will Kick Off on Oct. 19

CJ signed a 10-year agreement with the PGA Tour in October to host the event starting from this year through 2026, with CJ CheilJedang’s Bibigo as the main sponsor of the event. Held between Oct. 19 and 22 at Nine Bridges in Jeju Island, The CJ Cup will be Korea’s first permanent PGA Tour tournament and one of the three regular PGA Tour tournaments in Asia.

'The Fortress' will Premiere on Oct. 20 in Over 30 Cities Across the US and Canada

CJ Entertainment is releasing “The Fortress,” a new period drama featuring popular South Korean actor, LEE Byung-hun. The movie will premiere on October 20, 2017 in over 30 cities across the U.S. and Canada. Following its premiere, “The Fortress” will be the main feature of Korean Film Days at the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles, and it has also been chosen to open at the London East Asia Film Festival (LEAFF) next in London.

CJ Entertainment to Expand Slate of Overseas Productions

South Korea’s CJ Entertainment plans to expand its lineup of local productions in overseas markets, producing at least 20 titles in more than 10 languages per year beginning in 2020. CJ’s plan to focus on localized foreign productions moves away from the traditional model of selling local films or remake rights. More films are underway for the U.S. market, where it will focus on producing small- and mid-budget films.

The opening of its 400th location around the world, makes 4DX the fastest-growing premium cinema format, having reached this milestone in seven-and-a-half years following its debut in 2009.
