Film Review: 'SAIGON BODYGUARDS'

Saigon Bodyguards reflects the undergoing globalization of the film industry. Produced by Canadian based Rhombus Media and Korean giant CJ Entertainment, this Vietnamese action comedy is helmed by Japanese director Ken Ochiai (The Tiger Mask, Ninja the Monster). Probably due to its international nature, the film quite stands out from other Southeast Asian productions, which mostly generate variations of the romantic comedy.

South Korean Film 'Confidential Assignment' Sells to Multiple Territories

CJ Entertainment announced a slew of deals for spy actioner “Confidential Assignment”, ahead of its market debut at the European Film Market in Berlin next month. The film has been sold to 42 territories, including the U.S., and will open in American cinemas via direct distribution by CJ on Jan. 27. Directed by Kim Sung-hoon, Confidential Assignment stars popular actor Hyun Bin as a North Korean agent sent to the South to track down a rogue military officer. Yoo Hae-jin plays the role of a South Korean detective who tries to interfere with the investigation and uncover the real motive behind Lim’s mission.

CJ CGV's Flagship U.S. Theatre Holds Grand Opening January 27 in Buena Park

CJ CGV will open its flagship U.S. location in Buena Park, California at the new The Source OC shopping center on January 27. The fifth largest multiplex theatre company in the world and a total cinema solution provider, CJ CGV operates 2,877 screens at 376 locations in seven countries. This will be the second CGV theatre in the United States, with the first located in Koreatown, Los Angeles.

CJ Cheiljedang Plans to Conquer the World’s Dumpling Market by 2020

South Korea’s CJ Cheiljedang Corp. plans to grab the biggest pie of the world’s dumpling market with its “Bibigo” steamed dumplings by 2020. The firm made the largest share in the U.S. dumplings market with a 11.3 percent share last year on sales. The firm will invest more to expand its production and export capabilities overseas spanning the U.S., China, Russia, Germany and Vietnam.

Kcon to Host Festival in Mexico

KCON, billed as “the world’s largest Korean culture and K-Pop music festival,” will host its first-ever Mexican edition at Mexico City Arena March 17 and 18. This will be KCON’s first Latin American stop; the fest, which launched in 2012, already has editions in the U.S., France, Japan and United Arab Emirates. KCON in Mexico will feature performances, with boy band MONSTA X already announced.

CJ E&M to launch Tving in America
